Doctoral Fellowships
The CIHR Strategic Training Program in Health Care, Technology,
and Place offers Doctoral Fellowships up to $25,000 and unique
mentorship opportunities to highly qualified applicants at
the University of Toronto and collaborating
institutions.
HCTP Doctoral Fellows are expected to study the interrelationships
between and among at least two of the four nodes that characterize
contemporary health care: the human body; health care technologies;
settings used for health care; and health care work. For more

The Award
Doctoral Fellowships are awarded in amounts from $5,000 up
to $25,000 per academic year to students registered in Doctoral
programs.
Fellows also participate in intensive interdisciplinary research,
HCTP courses, a monthly seminar series, Annual Interdisciplinary
Workshop, and professional development workshops.
Terms of the Award
- Doctoral Fellows are required to be enrolled in a doctoral
program full-time and to maintain residency within reasonable
proximity of their HCTP Mentor, either in Toronto or at
a Collaborating Institution.
- Fellowships are intended to enhance existing
funding support awarded to promising new scholars.
- The duration of a Doctoral Fellowship is 12 months
with a renewal for another 12 months.
- Doctoral Fellows are required to meet the degree requirements
of their home departments and the HCTP Program.
- Award recipients are referred to as "CIHR Strategic Training
Fellows in Health Care, Technology, and Place." The CIHR,
Supporting Institutes, and the Health Care, Technology &
Place Research and Training Program must be acknowledged
in all related publications, presentations and other knowledge
translation activities.To Top
Program Requirements
- Enrolment in one of the four HCTP
Core Courses.
- Regular participation in the monthly HCTP
Seminar Series, and the provision of at least one formal
presentation.
- Participation in the HCTP
Annual Interdisciplinary Workshop.
- Conduct research under the mentorship of at least two
HCTP Faculty Mentors who
represent different disciplines.
- Creation of a Research Workplan and Mentorship Agreement
with the Primary and Adjunct Mentors.
- Participation in other HCTP activities, including professional
development workshops, lecture series, Fellows' caucus,
and interdisciplinary team research projects, etc.
- Formal program exit interview upon completion.To

Program Admission and Renewal Criteria
All applications are reviewed by the HCTP Fellowship Review
Committee using the following criteria:
- Research promise and commitment.
- Pertinence of proposed research to the themes of HCTP.
- Aptitude for interdisciplinary research.
- At the Fellowship renewal review, performance is assessed
in relation to the Fellow's Research Workplan and Mentorship
Agreement.
- Note: Manuscript preparation, submission and publication,
grant writing, and/or effective knowledge translation activities
are usually key requirements for renewal of Doctoral Fellowships.To

- Formal evidence of application/admission to a doctoral
program at the University of Toronto or a collaborating
institution.
- Research Statement.
- Three (3) confidential Letters of Support.
- Two (2) samples of academic writing.
- Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions.
- Current Curriculum Vitae.
- Formal evidence of application for and/or awarded funding
